The Melinda’s toile pattern draws from 18th-century French pastoral scenes but modernizes the scale and linework for contemporary wear. We worked with our print studio to lighten the traditional engraving weight, making the motifs feel airy rather than heavy.

The waist features three rows of elastic smocking stitched directly into the fabric, not sewn on as a separate band. This construction method distributes stretch evenly across your natural waistline, preventing the bunching or rolling common with attached elastic casings.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, turning the dress inside out to protect the print. Use a mild detergent without optical brighteners. Hang the dress to dry rather than using a tumble dryer, as heat can shrink the cotton voile and weaken the elastic smocking. If wrinkles develop, steam on a hanger or use a warm iron on the cotton setting, avoiding direct heat on the smocked waistband.
The dress measures approximately 48 inches from shoulder to hem in size medium. On someone 5’4″ or shorter, expect the hem closer to the ankle. At 5’6″ to 5’8″, it hits mid-calf. If you’re 5’9″ or taller, it will land just below the knee — still midi length but with a shorter proportion. The tiered skirt’s bias-cut construction means the hem hangs evenly regardless of your height.
The bodice is fully lined with soft cotton batiste, so you won’t need a camisole or slip underneath. The skirt is a single layer of cotton voile, which is lightweight and breathable but not sheer when you’re standing in normal indoor or outdoor lighting. If you’re concerned about sheerness in very bright sunlight, nude seamless underwear is all you need.
